CSG protestors target firm in Brisbane

http://www.freeview.com.au/images/shows/873a597f-7b22-4700-9821-b7c435c7d231.jpg

Nine news reports:

Anti-coal seam gas protesters claim a consultancy firm is sitting on a study into CSG emissions because it doesn't like the conclusions.

A handful of protesters gathered outside energy consultancy WorleyParsons' Brisbane office on Wednesday, chanting "WorleyParsons, QGC, what are you trying to hide from me".

StopCSG Brisbane spokesman Ewan Saunders says the consulting firm has suppressed a report on coal seam gas (CSG) emissions, commissioned by a climate think tank in June, because it has a multimillion dollar contract with CSG company QGC.

GREEN DEALS: Solar thermal thinkfest

CLIMATE SPECTATOR reports: About 1000 experts from the emerging solar thermal energy industry have gathered in Grenada, Spain, for the IEA-sponsored SolarPACES conference, with several dozen Australians also in attendance. Groups from the Australian Solar Institute, the ANU solar thermal research centre, the CSIRO, the ACT government and technology developers such as Transfield Novasol and Wizard are also in attendance.

Matthew Wright, the head of Beyond Zero Emissions, says two major themes seem to be emerging from discussions – one is a concession that solar PV has won the day in terms of costs of electricity generated, and the other is that the future of solar thermal lies in storage. These themes are being played out in the US, where non-storage thermal projects funded by government loan guarantees are being substituted by solar PV because of costs, but projects with storage are going ahead.

Beyond Zero Emissions Support Climate Action Rally

LATEST UPDATE (15/3/2011) - The rally for action on climate change had an attendance of around 8000-10,000 people, while the climate change denier rally had only around 200-400.

MELBOURNE—Today, Melbournians will rally to support action on climate change. The show of people power will demonstrate that the Opposition Leader Tony Abbott and his supporters are out of touch not only with climate science but also with public opinion.

Beyond Zero Emissions will stand with the community and allies from Getup, the Australian Youth Climate Coalition, Environment Victoria, and the Union Climate Connectors, to support action on climate change.

Matthew Wright, Beyond Zero Emissions Executive Director and 2010 Environment Minister’s Young Environmentalist of the Year says:

“Beyond Zero Emissions support the public rally for action on climate change. Mr. Abbott, the extremist shock jocks and climate change deniers are out of touch with public opinion. The Australian Government must stand firm against this scare campaign and deliver policies that help build a renewable energy economy.”

Matthew Wright adds:

“A carbon price combined with a national feed-in tariff for large-scale baseload solar will set Australia on track for a jobs rich and prosperous future. Delaying or preventing action threatens our economy and our climate.”

Grow Jobs by Ending Coal

The Latrobe Valley in Victoria is currently partly dependent on coal for its economy, but if it is to survive into the future, it must move away from coal and tap into the renewable energy revolution. For this to happen the first power stations to be switched off should be the dirtiest, at Hazelwood and Morwell.

“The future for the Latrobe Valley lies in manufacturing of renewable energy components, not coal, and what’s missing is State and Federal Government commitment to this essential transition”, Mark Ogge, campaigner for Beyond Zero Emissions said.
