http://www.reuters.com/article/environmentNews/idUSL0545046820080305

STOCKHOLM (Reuters) - Sweden will aim to get nearly half its energy
from renewable sources by 2020 as part of an EU-wide plan, Energy and
Enterprise Minister Maud Olofsson said on Wednesday.

Olofsson said in Washington that Sweden had been tasked with increasing
its share of renewable energy to 49 percent from a current 40 percent as
part of binding targets set by the European Union.

"This would be the highest share in the world," Olofsson said in the
UK Zero Carbon laws - all new homes to be rated on Green Credentials from 1 May

The Government's drive towards zero carbon housing took a major step
forward today with the announcement that all new homes are to be rated
on their green credentials from 1 May.

A rating against the Code for Sustainable Homes, which measures nine
categories of sustainable design including energy, water and waste, will
be required for all new homes. Homes which exceed the sustainable
standards in existing Building Regulations will be awarded up to six
stars. Those homes that have not been assessed against the Code will
score a nil-rating.

Brown vow on climate change battle

Gordon Brown pledged to make Britain a world leader in the battle
against global warming, with a green "technological revolution" which he
said could create hundreds of thousands of jobs in the UK.

In his first major speech on the environment since becoming Prime
Minister, Mr Brown hinted strongly that he is ready to extend the
Government's target of a 60% cut in Britain's greenhouse gas emissions
by 2050, revealing that he has asked an independent committee of experts
to look at the possibility of an 80% goal.

He announced talks with supermarkets and other retailers over the

World record to power industry

Australia produces more than 10 tonnes of carbon dioxide in generating
power for each person per year, compared with 9 tonnes for Americans and
2 tonnes for the Chinese.

The new database, called CARMA, Carbon Monitoring for Action, has been
compiled by the Washington-based Center for Global Development, an
independent think tank on issues related to global development.

Australia ranks seventh in the world in terms of its total carbon
dioxide emissions from power stations, well ahead of countries such as
Italy, Britain, France and South Korea.

Pacific Gas and Electric, (PG&E) has entered into a contract to buy 177
megawatts of power from a solar thermal power plant that will be built
by Ausra.

The power plant will be located in San Luis Obispo county in central
California and provide, roughly, enough power for 60,000 homes. Ausra
has filed applications to build the plant with the California Energy
Commission and hopes to have the plant up and generating power in 2010.

This won't be the last solar thermal contract PG&E will sign. PG&E says
it plans to get a gigawatt worth of power from solar thermal systems in

Zero Emissions to stem extreme Arctic and Antarctic Melting.

We've heard the stories about the Arctics rapid melt, which could see it ice free by 2020, as opposed to the previously pessimistic assessments that showed this possibly occurring by 2050. Now NASA has released a study that shows a similar situation occurring in Antarctica. At the same time we should be aware that a rapid melt of the Arctic circle, will bring warmer water to the pole which is adjacent to Greenland, and cause even more rapid melting of the Greenland Ice Sheet.

To assess this, let's start with what can be called the consensus view. Through careful evaluation of evidence, most climate scientists have reached three main conclusions.

Reducing Our Footprint to Zero

The Economist: beyond the Prius - plug-in hybrid vehicles and European diesel hybrids

Hybrid cars
Beyond the Prius

Jun 14th 2007
From The Economist print edition
Toyota's Prius hybrid stole a march on the car industry. What comes next?

WHETHER in Los Angeles, Tokyo or London, the Prius, Toyota's trailblazing petrol-electric hybrid car, has become a common sight since the second (and much-improved) version was launched three years ago. The Prius has since achieved cult status among image-conscious Hollywood stars and greener-than-thou politicians. Last week Toyota said it had passed the milestone of manufacturing more than 1m hybrid vehicles.

Power grid fuels hybrid electric cars

The Wall Street Journal - Politics & Economics: U.S. Finds Electric
Power Grid Can Fuel Fleets of Plug-In Cars
By John J. Fialka
11 December 2006

WASHINGTON -- The nation's existing electric power grid could fuel as
many as 180 million electric cars, a Department of Energy study
estimates.

The study, being released today by the department's Pacific Northwest
National Laboratory, is the federal government's first look at the
grid's capacity to handle the demands of so-called plug-in hybrids,
which can be operated as an all-electric car for most daily commutes.

California utility rejects cheap power from polluting coal plant

A small utility near Lake Tahoe's north shore thought it had the answer to providing long-term affordable energy - coal.

But after an outpouring of public criticism and political pressure, the Truckee Donner Public Utility District voted to reject a 50-year contract to obtain energy from a planned coal plant in Utah.
