Beyond Zero Emissions

City transport fleet to go carbon neutral

Brisbane City Council has announced that their transport fleet will go carbon neutral within one year. Beyond Zero Emissions would like them to do the same with all their operations. We also call on them to change all purchasing to hybrid electric, purchase renewables to power this and have them converted to plug-in hybrid if possible.

Al Gore's documentary An Inconvenient Truth will be screened four times in Brisbane parks as part of the council's efforts to influence climate change.

The movie screenings are part of a $119 million City Smart campaign.

Aspects of Brisbane City Council's City Smart environment sustainability policy include:

- $1 million carbon offset program for the council's vehicle fleet;

- $3.5 million to plant one million trees in the Oxley Creek catchment area; and

- A promise to make the Brisbane City Council vehicle fleet, including buses and ferries, "carbon neutral" over the next 12 months.

Brisbane City Council will also host Neighbourhood Sustainability Expos throughout the suburbs.

Cr Newman said a new $1.6 million Sustainability Grant Scheme would give community groups money to reduce their water and energy use.

"The Sustainability Grant Scheme will allow up to $1.6 million for the installation of sustainable devices like solar panels on properties owned by community groups."

More than $57 million will be spent on preserving "at risk" bushland over the next four years.
