The Melbourne Times Act Now on Emissions - BZE Tells Yarra Mayor

Rob Campbell responds to Simon Kidd's April 18th article with a letter to the editor titled Act Now on Emissions, page four.

Act Now on Emissions

Mayor Jenny Farrar may claim that criticism of Yarra Council's green credentials is "unfair" (TMT, April 18), but the truth remains that its carbon emission targets are simply inadequate.
Last month Maribyrnong Council adopted a firm resolution to become carbon neutral across all operations by 2015. The Shire of Yarra Ranges will spend $790,000 to achieve net zero emissions within 12 months.
By comparison, Yarra's commitment to use 15 per cent green power in streetlights is worthless.
Thousands of climate change experts around the world including the UK Met Office and NASA's Goddard Institute warn we have less than 10 years to makes comprehensive reductions in our carbon emissions to protect humanity. There is simply too much carbon in the atmosphere.
Yarra should not wait until next year to review its emissions policy. Do it now.
