Beyond Zero Emissions

Adrian's TAS Tour

Adrian has just returned from a two week trip to Tassie. The trip came about when he was invited to be the guest climate change speaker at the Weld Convergence held near Huonville on the 19-21st of Jan.

The presentation was a general introduction to climate change, but also included the reasons why we need to go to zero emissions and below and the link between the destruction of vital carbon sinks when you log an old growth forest and convert it to a 80 year rotation production forest.

The talk was very well received and for some it was the first time they had been exposed to how serious a threat climate change is.

The rest of the time was spent lobbying groups all around Tasmania with a zero minus and climate and forestry message and included environment groups, TASCOSS, and the Tasmanian Council of Churches.

The response was very positive with a number of groups wishing to have us back to do a public talk tour, and Phil Pullenger from Environment Tasmania enthusiastically supporting the Zero Minus goals.

Adrian also helped organise an action around the Draft Climate Change Strategy for Tasmania, which got television coverage.

Matthew joined me for a week and helped in the lobbying.

We managed to take one day off for a walk up to Lake Skinner and the Snowy mountain range and were happy to find the remnant of a late snow fall still hiding in the shadows on the ridge.

If you are ever in Huonville, go right at the roundabout and pull over after 80 meters and have lunch at the organic food store and cafe (its rent supports the environment centre) before going out the back and visiting the Huon environment centre and find out about the continued logging of Tamania's old growth forests, a truly criminal act on so many levels.

Thanks to everybody who helped support the trip.
