Scott Bilby: We're talking with Mil Ovan, senior vice-president of Firefly Energy, a company that has developed a carbon graphite foam grid technology that increases the performance of lead acid batteries and reduces the amount of lead used. The technology has the potential to improve a wide range of market segments including transportation, construction, computer back up systems, just to name a few and also with significant cost savings. Welcome to the show Mil.
Mil Ovan: Thank you very much for having me. Appreciate it.
Sunday September 12-13, 2009. Join a peaceful community protest and mass civil disobedience. WEAR BLUE!
"Switch off Hazelwood. Switch off Coal. Switch on Renewables" is a day of fun, creative and inspiring direct community action at Hazelwood coal power station.
Coal burning power stations are one of the main contributers to climate change, and Hazelwood is one of the dirtiest in the industrialised world.
On Sunday September 13th, 2009 people from across Victoria, and Australia, will come together for a day of peaceful community mass civil disobedience to Switch off Hazelwood and Switch off Coal – we will be taking direct action for renewable energy.

Scott Bilby: This morning on Beyond Zero we're talking with Dr Craig S. Turchi, Senior Engineer at the USA's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, otherwise known as NREL. Craig originally joined NREL in 1990 working in the solar industrial program. He was detoxifying hazardous waste using solar ultra violet light. After leaving NREL he went to work as a principle investigator and program leader at ADA technologies. Craig is back with NREL now, he is helping with the Concentrated Solar Power project and he is working on systems analysis and the development and assessment of heat transfer fluids and thermal storage concepts. Craig is task leader for the Concentrated Solar Power programs market transformation activities. Craig joins us live from Colorado in the United States. Hello Craig and thanks for joining us.
Scott Bilby: This morning on Beyond Zero we’re talking to Graham Ford. He’s the CEO of Heliodynamics, a company based near Cambridge in the UK, and the maker of solar concentrating technologies that convert solar energy into usable electricity and heat, and of particular interest to Beyond Zero is their use of combined solar thermal and photovoltaic technology in some of their products.
Welcome to the show Graham.
Graham Ford: Well, it’s great to be here.
Beyond Zero interviews David Orr, whose latest book 'Down to the Wire: Confronting Climate Collapse' can be pre-ordered here.
Scott Bilby: My name is Scott Bilby and this morning on Beyond Zero I'll be speaking with David Orr. David is the Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics at Oberlin College and a James Marsh Professor at the University of Vermont.
He is the recipient of four Honorary degrees and other awards including The Millennium Leadership Award from Global Green, the Bioneers Award, the National Wildlife Federation Leadership Award, and a Lyndhurst Prize acknowledging "persons of exceptional moral character, vision, and energy."
Scott Bilby: This morning on beyond zero we’re talking with Rainer Aringhoff from Solar Millennium. Solar Millennium is a company that develops and implements solar thermal solar plants; with existing plants currently in Spain. They also have a focus on other areas around the world including the United States, China and North Africa.
Scott Bilby: This morning on Beyond Zero, we'll be talking to with Sylvia Tulloch, Managing Director of Dyesol Industries, an Australian renewable energy company that supplies equipment, materials and components for what are called dye solar cells. Dye solar cells turn sunlight into electricity by imitating the way plants convert sunlight into energy.
